Draft Dan ???

Remember when Tricky Dick told reporters in California, “You won't have Nixon to kick around anymore.”

Remember when Dan McShane told us, after a brutally negative campaign for Mayor of Bellingham, he was not interested in pursuing other public office in the future?

Notwithstanding those protestations, the McShane Machine is again on the prowl for a toehold to higher (as in income) office.

Their goal? To replace Pete Kremen in the now quite lucrative position of County Exec. The position they presently desire, Whatcom County Councilman.

Following the famous “Cookie Caper” that had Kremen and what turns out to be his legal counsel, Davey “homo populi” McEachran bilking taxpayers for a few cool million in their retirement heist, the attractiveness of becoming the next County Exec took on new meaning for the McShanes, unexpectedly defeated in their reach for the brass ring at City Hall.

Curiously, a number of concerned citizens, troubled by the prospect of the County Council again being overrun by propertyrightswingers, have approached the local dems, and the usual campaign financiers, only to be rebuffed with the kind advice, “don't worry about the election, if nobody really good comes forward Dan McShane will run.”

The McShanes aren't really looking for another underpaid tour on the County Council. They never were. The position is a necessary stepping stone to the next higher (as in paying) office opening. The next opening at the top being County Executive with its approximately $150,000 per year pay off.

And that's only the sticker price for taxpayers! Look what Pete's made of the office, and what it's cost us. And he ain't half as smart as Lisa. Hey, they should guarantee a kick back to the tax payers for our support !!

Not that far ahead is a race, not unlike the recent stampede for the Mayor's office, to unfold in Whatcom County for the office of executive. Kremen realizes his abysmal expectations for re-election, as a result of the egregious salary he's placed on the office.

Send his checks to Mexico where he can retire in ignominy, he'll be in good company. (Doesn't Dewey have an adjoining condominium?) Ah, that non-public service bestowed such rewards.

Hasn't the time finally arrived where all county taxpayers see through the scams and larceny that sap them while the needed services they'd willingly support go unfunded. Isn't it time to open a race for County Executive in which our needs are finally addressed in true candor?

If that's what the McShane program intends to promote, god bless.

In the meantime, why discourage otherwise willing individuals who might serve well in the County legislative body?

The time is past for Democrat and Republican party operatives to choose our county candidates. There is a reason these are non partisan positions. The time has come for the machinations of these political organizations to see the light of day.

If the McShanes don't want to endure a primary challenge, maybe they just shouldn't run.
